Can i leave my tenancy agreement early?
I moved into a property at the beginning of the year and signed a 6 month shorthold lease. Since moving into the property we have noticed a lot of black mould growing. This is in every room in the house and also in the wardrobes affecting our clothes now. It seems the landlord knew about this problem before we signed the lease and not only didnt mention it to us covered up the problem! Since noticing the mould we have cleaned it ourselves but after it growing back within a month we asked our landlord to come and sort it out. They brought some mould killer around and told us to keep the heating on but open the windows for ventilation. We have young children in the house every other weekend and are worried this could affect their health. my partner has also suffered a lot of chest problems although not 100% it is the mould that is causing it. We have now found a new property to move into and are just wondering how to get out of the lease and how much notice we have to give?

Examine that lease!
You can always buy your way out of the lease. While this is not the ideal option, it is one that you may have to consider and it may be cheaper in the long run if you would have medical problems associated with the mold.
Your lease may have a clause (I know mine does), that reads what happens when the place becomes “untenable.” Unfortunately you and your leaser may not agree on the definition of that word. It would be helpful to have lots of documentation to back you up…doctor’s recommendations, bills, etc. as well as information from your health dept. The health dept will typically have you mail/take in a sample.
