Black Mold Landlord Responsibility

Mold in my home … liability?

I can rent a room in the house in April, recently renovated. My mother, my fiance and daugter and have lived here for a little over a year. There have been several outbreaks of black mold and I was wondering what kind of liability does the owner?

Each state has different owners and tenants law to protect the rights of both parties to a lease. You have to check with individual state laws to find out details. Landlords and Tenants Acts mandate that the landlord keep the premises for rent safe and livable conditions, and specify that the owner is responsible to make repairs, supply of provisions for waste disposal, water supply service, and provide heating and cooling systems as the time required. The owner is also required to maintain the common areas in an acceptable condition safe and clean. Some states may require the owner to notify the tenant particular responsibility, the tenant has, as the maintenance of smoke detectors present in the rental unit. The owner can also be charged with notifying the tenants of any health hazard that may be specific to the locality, such as mold.
