my hermit crab tank is starting to stink!?
its starting to stink here, and do not know why. 2 of my hermits are possibly molt, but not a chemical smell or anything. its more of a moisture / mold / smell of stinking fish to my room. Any idea what is causing this? and a way to remove the smell? also, as I mentioned before, i really cannot Cuba cleaning my hermit crabs molt, so that an idea that does not require thorough cleaning would be nice … and I do not think overheating because the temperature is at 78 ~ 80ish F im positive of their dead are not raised, and 2 that arent dumb continued to arrive, and places that possibly moves do not smell. its just a general smell im getting from the tank. Could be the new sheet moss (Nontoxic) I put in a few days ago? I have seen some molds starting to develop some of the pieces of wood i posted, the smell may also be that? and any otherwise I can get rid of mold?
Well, if not the crabs, it must be something else. You have to go through each item, remove it, and smell it. I also take this opportunity to check for rust on anything. Mold can easily be growing into anything, and you can not see it, so take this chance to prove it. Then put it aside, unless you have determined the source of the odor. Once they took everything out (and not any of these items was), then you need to check the substrate. As your Hermies Metro, need to be very careful, but you can remove the top layer of the substrate. If that does not smell, you have to try to sniff what section of the substrate the smell is coming from. It sounds as if you know where hermits molt, so if you do not come out of it, taking care that the article unearth and buried food check or anything like that. If nothing else works, I'm plum out of ideas.
