What do I do when I'm trapped in a family business that is currently hurting my health and holding back my career?
I am a educated young engineer graduated from one of the best schools in Canada, with diverse work experiences and skills. During the past year I have been helping our family business, but recently fell ill due to toxic mold in a dangerous working environment. Besides that, our family businesses are disorganized and poorly managed, but should be profitable if we (especially me) to put more effort into it. My problem is I do not want to miss my window of opportunity for a career transition rewarding at the expense of sacrificing more time and health. I think I've sacrificed more than you feel comfortable with but if I go, business, and my parents will likely fall most separation. family and business against the values of his career focused on selfish ambition ???… Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
This is going to be tough, but the reality – not your business. Is that your parents (I guess) and also assume that I have run this business for a long time without you right? If you're going and occurs an error that is not their responsibility. You have to do what is right for you. Now if you really want to run the business at least ask for a share ownership so you can get rewarded for their hard work. If it is not something you want to make you regret spending a lot of time and energy on something that is not rewarding.
